Senior CPN-UML leader Astalaxmi Shakya has become Nepal’s first female Chief Minister.

Shakya was sworn in on Wednesday evening, as the Chiqef Minister of Bagmati province following the resignation of Dormani Paudel.

Earlier, announcing his resignation, She was elected the leader of CPN-UML’s parliamentary party in the provincial assembly, paving way for her appointment.

She had been a close aide to Madhav Kumar Nepal who formed a new party on the same day. However, Oli’s CM card removed her from Nepal’s group. She was speculated to have become the CM in the very beginning, but had been weaned of the opportunity, as she had once been a bitter critic of Oli government.

She is the local resident of Kathmandu from the Newar community and has been married to UML senior leader Amrit Bohora.

Also, she is the senior most female leader in the party.
