Nepali Congress’ candidate backed by opposition alliance, Driga Narayan Pandey has won the National Assembly by-poll from Lumbini Province.
The by-poll election for National Assembly was held in Ghorahi of Dang on Monday afternoon from 9:00 am-3:00 pm; with winning candidate Pandey securing 4140 votes against UML candidate Chandra Bahadur Khadka getting 3612.
The Maoist Centre, Upendra Yadav-led faction of Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal and Rashtriya Janamorcha had voted for Pandey to win the race.
Thus, after Bagmati province the opposition common candidate has won in Lumbini too.
Three representatives of local level; Dhawal Shamsher Rana mayor of Nepalgunj(RPP), Narainapur remote municipality chief Istiyak Ahmed Shah(PSPN) and Gulmi Darbar remote municipality chief Ashok Kumar Thapa (NC) were not present on the occasion.
Thapa and Shah are undergoing treatment for COVID-19, while Rana chose not to participate.
All the 83 province assembly members casted their votes.
27 of them were infected with coronavirus and separate management was made for them for voting.
In between, voices were raised that since the seat belonged to Maoist Centre, the candidate from the same party should have contested the election.
