Kathmandu: A 24-hour toll free helpline-1145- has come into operation from here today on the last day of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
\nThe helpline, launched by the National Women Commission, is aimed at putting an end to GBV cases in the country as anyone can call in and report their or others incident of GBV and receive sustained support from the concerned authorities.
\nLaunching the helpline, Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare Bikram Bahadur Thapa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reduce all forms of violence against women in the country.
\nHuman Rights Commission’s Spokesperson Mohana Ansari called for unity among all to end the GBV and stressed on increasing women’s participation for the same.
\nSupreme Court’s Justice Sapana Malla underscored women’s ownership over property, rights to education among others to combat violence against women.
\nThe Commission’s study notes that of the total complaints lodged by survivors of GBV in the last 12 months, 96 per cent of them reported to have suffered violence in different occasions such as marriage, festivals and fairs.<\/p>\n
