At least one person died and 3 others went missing, when a boat carrying 10 people including infants capsized in Karnali river flowing between Kailali and Surkhet district.

The incident took place on Sunday afternoon at around 12 am, when the women were on their way from Mohanyal rural municipality to a health post on the other side of the Karnali river in Chaukune rural municipality in Surkhet district.

The dead has been identified as Dhansara Salami Magar from Mohanyal rural municipality-3, Kailali district.

“The 19 year old Dhansara Salami Magar expired at 14:40 afternoon while undergoing treatment and her one month son is receiving treatment in Kailali hospital. Another injured 4 month child is also admitted in a Surkhet based hospital,” informed Khagendra Pd Rijal, Kailali CDO.

“The whereabout of the three missing is still unknown and search operation is underway,” he added.

The missing persons have been identified as Urmila Salami Magar (20) of Mohanyal Rural Municipality-3 and her 10-month old child, and Parbati Thapa (20) from the same area.

Meanwhile, a team of police deployed from the Sugarkhal-based Area Police Office in Kailali are around the incident site.

Every year around 2 people lose their life in the absence of the bridge across the river.

Budget alloted but no tender- 2011
The local leaders claim that they have been reaching to Kathmandu since 2011 urging for a bridge over the river.

“We had been to meet ministers and central level leaders with a all party delegation. A survey was ordered but there was no tender so the work got halted,” says Khadka BK, a local leader.

“Though Mohanyal and Chaukune are two rural municipalities of two different districts and provinces; our cultures are similar and share many things in common,” BK added.

Children from both sides cross the river for schools.

The Mohanyal residents have to walk 2 days to reach their district headquarters, while Chaukune is just a matter of Fe minutes on boat.

It’s a fate of the poor villagers to get a proper budget for infrastructures construction only after a sad incident.
