At least 8 people died in Malari-Sumna area in Uttarakhand along India-China border after an avalanche hit the region.

The incident took place around 4pm on Friday when an avalanche hit a location about 4km ahead of Sumna on Sumna – Rimkhim road in Uttarakhand.

A communique from the Army said 384 labourers working with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in the area had been rescued and six of them were critical.

An Army camp is located 3 km from Sumna. The area has experienced heavy rains and snow since the last five days which is still continuing,” the communique further said.

Geologists, meanwhile, were of the opinion that the avalanche was not triggered by a glacier burst.

MPS Bisht, director of Uttarakhand Space Application Centre (USAC), said according to initial reports accessed by USAC, the avalanche occurred due to heavy snowfall.
